FED: Australia provides $500,000 for Kosovo mine training
Kosovo refugees in Australia and Kosovo are to be trained to avoid landmines, cluster bombs
and booby traps under a $500,000 program announced by Foreign Minister ALEXANDER DOWNER.
Mr DOWNER says returning Kosovars are in danger of death and injury from these weapons, and
evidence shows most of the casualty would be children.
The minister says Australia will give $420,000 to the United Nations Mine Action Service to
train residents of Kosovo about the dangers of landmines and other explosives.
Another $80,000 will be spent on training Kosovo refugees temporarily housed in Australia.
The assistance is in addition to the $6 million already provided for humanitarian aid in
Kosovo and the estimated $70 million cost of providing a temporary haven for 4,000 Kosovo
refugees in Australia.
