Qld: former powerlifter jailed on drugs charges

A former Australian powerlifter has been jailed for six years on heroin trafficking charges.

Truck driver STEVE KANDARAKIS, 49, pleaded GUILTY in the Queensland Supreme Court to
one count of trafficking heroin, three counts of supply, two of possession and two of
possessing proceeds from crime between October and December 1987.

KANDARAKIS was caught supplying heroin to undercover police operatives on the Gold Coast.

When he was arrested at Broadbeach on December 23, 1987, KANDARAKIS had $1,000 in his
car and another $21,000 hidden at home.

KANDARAKIS told police he only turned to crime when his marriage split up and he lost
his gym in Sydney and a coffee shop on the Gold Coast.

Before the offences KANDARAKIS represented Australia in power lifting.

Supreme Court Justice JOHN HELMAN sentenced him to six years jail with a recommendation
for release on parole after two years.
