Vic: Labor could benefit from a Murray defection, Crean
MELBOURNE, Aug 5 AAP - Either major party could benefit if Australian Democrats SenatorAndrew Murray left his party, Opposition Leader Simon Crean said today.
Democrats leader Natasha Stott Despoja yesterday gave Senator Murray another two daysto decide whether he was in or out of the party.
The deadline follows weeks of internal tension, including the resignation of formerleader Meg Lees from the party.
Analysts have speculated Senator Lees' vote, and possibly that of an independent SenatorMurray, could benefit the Liberal government.
But Mr Crean said that might not be the case.
"Certainly, if there are more independents it gives the government more options, butit gives us more options too," he told journalists after addressing students at MelbourneHigh School.
"I think anyone would be crazy-brave to predict what the Senate would do, even if therewere more defections from the Democrats."
Mr Crean said he, like the rest of the nation, had to wait to see what happened nextwith Senator Murray's deadline, which expires at the close of business tomorrow.
